Over our winter holiday vacation, something happened. I stopped drinking coffee. It wasn’t really conscious, I just was sleeping in, napping, relaxing, and coffee wasn’t a necessary vice. Without the caffeine, I was sleeping better too.
When school started back, I thought, ‘Hmmm, maybe I don’t need coffee. Maybe I’ll try decaf instead.’
I was an idiot.
I’ve been dealing with horrible afternoon headaches that are getting progressively worse. I fear my stubbornness may just get the best of me. I’m not willing to throw the towel in just yet, but I’m wondering if I made a rash decision.
Am I the only nut who doesn’t drink caffeine to get moving in the morning? What’s your wake up ritual?

so funny...i have a caffeine headache right this moment, because i've been trying to go off coffee too! it's not working so well and i have a feeling i might have to give up soon. but i'm trying to stay strong...you can do it!
You should try half decaf half regular. It's been working for me.
I drink soda. Such a poor choice! I stop and get a fountain soda from the local fast food restaurant. It calms me down although I know they say caffeine actually contributes to anxiety!
I still desperately need a cup of coffee in the morning to get me going, but I switch to tea in the afternoon (wither black, or Mate, which I really like). I find that afternoon tea doesn't give me the jitters, but keeps me focused and headache free for the rest of the day. I can also (usually) sleep better when I have tea in the afternoon, versus coffee. I applaud you for trying to cut out the caffeine, just do it in baby steps!
I dont drink coffee or for that matter a whole lot of caffiene because Coke tastes disgusting to me! Ive been getting up and exercising (nothing strenuous - just a couple miles on an exercise bike) and that gives me a little kick to get started.
I gave up coffee almost a year ago and while I slip up and have the occasional one, I'm doing well. Generally I'm sleepy until I get to work and then the kiddo's energy usually brings me to life.
I don't drink coffee anymore because it bothers my stomach. You will get used to it after awhile :) I sometimes drink non-caffeinated tea if I just want the ritual of it.
Make sure you are hydrated. I know, telling a teacher who rarely gets any time alone to drink more water. I can tell when I haven't had enough water. Always have a water bottle handy.
Once in a while, a hot chocolate warms me up on a cold MN morning.
I wish I could do the exercise thing like SassyGinger. I'm positive that would help things.
I am not a coffee drinker at all- it gives me the shakes! I just can't handle the caffeine. I am a breakfast person, I always have something healthy to eat, nothing big. A yogurt or bowl of cereal will suffice. :)
I NEED coffee. We're preparing for ice and snow here. There is talk of enough ice to bring down power lines. My prep? Batteries, cell phones charged, Nook charged and loaded and I brewed a pot of coffee and put it in a giant thermos! The kids can drink water - but mama better have her coffee!
I know it sounds silly, but I've heard that an apple has a similar effect on the body as caffeine so it might be worth a try?!
i drink my coffee intravenously. And i like it strong enough that it can defend itself.
the caffeine headaches will stop if you stay stubborn. Try focused relaxation... or exercise before school to get going. Both work well for me!
I gave up caffeine almost a month ago...I've tried before and always went back...those times, I always weaned myself off of caffeine and substituted non-caffeinated beverages..this time, cold turkey. I had one very crabby afternoon and evening...My head ached (but not a headache)...and now I'm fine. After day 4, I didn't have a craving...I was a 72-80 oz. a day drinker of Diet Mountain Dew.... I sleep better now too (I didn't drink caffeine after 4 pm before)... You can do it!
drink the coffee.
(come back to the dark side. We miss you.)
